Why is there no lag in international calls? I mean it's halfway across the world; even light takes 1 second. Then what kind of sorcery is this?

I did a ping measurements from a company in Montreal, Canada to my server in Amsterdam, Netherland and it was stable at 82 ms. Which brings the latency at 41 ms. I was amazed! I was expecting to find something like from 400 ms (fast) to 800 ms (not so fast), I was psychologically prepared for that, and I couldn't believe my eyes! Optical fibers are so amazing when long distance are involved.
